Quarter slices versus OKRs that pretend certainty

By Noah Jeong

Supporting visual for Quarter slices versus OKRs that pretend certainty
OKRs thrive on ambition; delivery thrives on explicit constraints. When teams glue the two together without translation layers, either the roadmap becomes fiction or the objective shrinks to busywork. We walk through a facilitation pattern used during Roadmap Lab Intensive engagements: pairing each objective with a dependency overlay and an explicit “not now” basket visible to finance partners. The middle section covers how we communicate slips—using ranges and dependency burn-down instead of single-date promises that invite blame games. We finish with a limitation: if staffing assumptions are politically invisible, even honest quarter slices get overridden outside the workshop.
